DAD ROCKS! – MOUNT MODERN

Mimas’ frontman Snævar Njáll Albertsson’s solo project Dad Rocks! has, for the past few years, been one of the most interesting acoustic acts around, blending Albertsson’s unique vocal style with intricate yet understated instrumentation in an accessible yet rewarding folk-pop package. His debut full-length album, Mount Modern, sees him perfect the kind of craftsmanship seen in previous EPs into a cohesive, engaging listen that capitalises on both his impressive musicianship and personal charm. The heart of the album really is Albertsson’s lyrics – a collection of genuine, warm and often witty observations, be it about the technological age (in the near-infuriatingly catchy lead single Weapons), growing older (Downaging) or becoming a father (Pants). It’s a reasonably stripped-back affair, never-allowing his backing elements to overshadow the vocals or guitar lines (a mistake that seemingly so many acoustic artists make when given a bit more money to make an LP), while allowing the subtleties of strings and horns to bolster the sound of each track. Come summer 2012, this should be the record on everyone’s stereo (a bit old fashioned yes, but saying ‘the record on everyone’s iPod makes me sad), but until then, let this one warm you up from the miserable winter.
